This retro console cable guide helps you work out what belongs where, which upgrades are worth making, and when an old cable is actually the problem. Whether you are firing up a Mega Drive, Nintendo 64, original PlayStation or an Xbox, the right connection makes a huge difference.
Start with the console, not the cable
Retro cables are not interchangeable just because the plugs look close enough. Manufacturers often used proprietary shapes, different pin layouts and different power requirements across generations. Even within one brand, a Super Nintendo cable, Nintendo 64 cable and GameCube cable may share a connector shape while supporting different video signals.
Before buying anything, check the exact console model on the sticker underneath or at the rear. “PlayStation” can mean an original PS1, PS one, PS2, PS3 or PS4, and each has its own connection options. The same goes for Xbox systems and Sega hardware. A quick model check avoids the classic disappointment of opening a parcel only to find the lead will not fit.
Also inspect the ports rather than assuming they all work. A bent centre pin, loose socket or built-up grime can create a flickering image that looks like a faulty cable. Switch the console off, unplug it from power and check carefully before ordering replacements.
Video cables: the picture quality ladder
The cable supplied with many older consoles was designed for the television sets of its day, not a large modern flat-screen. It may work, but it is not always the best way to see your favourite games now.
RF: usable, but usually the last resort

The trade-off is picture softness. Colours can bleed, text may look less crisp, and a big modern screen can make the limitations obvious. Some newer TVs no longer include composite inputs, or they use a 3.5 mm AV adaptor that is not universal. Check your TV manual before buying a breakout lead, because the wiring can differ between brands.
S-Video, RGB and component: sharper options for supported systems
S-Video separates parts of the video signal for a cleaner image than composite. RGB generally delivers an even sharper result on compatible consoles and displays, but Australian TVs rarely have SCART inputs, so RGB setups can need specialised equipment. Not every console outputs RGB without modification either.
Component video uses red, green and blue video plugs, plus separate red and white audio plugs. It was a standout option for consoles such as the PlayStation 2, original Xbox, GameCube and Wii. When both the console and TV support it, component can provide a noticeably cleaner image and may enable progressive scan modes in games that offer them.
Do not confuse component video with composite just because both use red and white audio plugs. The extra green, blue and red plugs are video, not surround sound. Forcing the wrong lead into the wrong ports can leave you with no image or wildly incorrect colours.
HDMI on modern TVs: cable or converter?
HDMI is convenient, but retro consoles do not magically become high-definition because an adaptor has an HDMI plug. Cheap all-in-one HDMI cables can be handy for a spare-room setup, yet quality varies wildly. Some add noticeable input lag, stretch the image, handle PAL signals poorly or produce a dim, noisy picture.
A dedicated converter or scaler is often the better choice if picture quality matters. These devices take an analogue signal from the console and convert it for HDMI displays. The better options process the signal quickly, preserve the original 4:3 aspect ratio and give you control over smoothing or scanlines.
It depends on how you play. For occasional family sessions, a straightforward compatible HDMI solution may be enough. For fast games like F-Zero X, Tekken 3 or Sonic the Hedgehog, low lag should be the priority. Avoid settings that force old 4:3 games into widescreen unless you enjoy seeing everyone look unusually tall and thin.
PAL consoles can add another wrinkle. Australian systems and games commonly use PAL formats, and some displays or converters do not accept every PAL resolution cleanly. Check that any HDMI solution specifically supports your console version and PAL output before committing.
Power supplies are not a guessing game
Video leads are frustrating when wrong. Power supplies can be dangerous when wrong. Never use a random plug pack because it fits the socket. The voltage, polarity, connector size, AC or DC output, and minimum current rating must match the console’s requirements.
Read the label on the original adaptor or the console itself. A replacement should provide the correct voltage and polarity, while meeting or exceeding the required current rating. For example, a console that needs 1 amp can use a correctly matched supply rated above 1 amp, but not one with the wrong voltage. AC and DC are not interchangeable.
Original power bricks can develop faults after decades in storage. If a console has no power, cuts out, smells hot or makes an unusual buzzing sound, stop using it. A tested replacement is far cheaper than risking the console you have spent years trying to find. If you are unsure, ask for help rather than taking a punt.
Controller, extension and accessory leads
Controller ports can be just as console-specific as power sockets. Troubleshoot before replacing everything
When a console gives you a black screen, start with the simple checks. Confirm the TV is on the correct input, push each plug in firmly, test another game if possible, and try the console on another compatible display. Clean the cable contacts gently with appropriate electronics cleaner and allow them to dry fully.
If the picture appears but has rolling lines, colour issues or crackling sound, test with another known-working cable before blaming the console. A cable is often the easiest fix, but damaged AV ports, ageing capacitors and internal faults can produce similar symptoms. Disc consoles also deserve a look at the disc itself.
